When making a decision, people tend to focus more on what they stand to gain than what they stand to lose
This means that when faced with two options, one of which has an expected positive outcome and another of which has a desired negative outcome, we are more likely to choose the latter option even if its actual likelihood is close or equal to the former’s likelihood (as long as it’s something we value).
